Equador, part 4 - Galapagos

Our land-based visit to these spectacular and historically significant islands defies storytelling. Isla Santa Cruz and Isla Isabella were our two main bases for exploration. LeeAnne managed to find us some beautiful accommodations and knowledgable guides for our 9 days there.

Equador, part 3 - Banos and Puyo region

Part 3 of our trip was really a 3-part experience: Banos offers misty views, cliff-edge pools and a bustling town below. There couldn't be a better place for Casa del Arbol - the Swing at the End of the World. The guided trip to the Puyo area gave us a chance to meet people who share their traditions in a functioning cultural village, to ride in a dugout canoe and to explore the edge of the Amazon Rainforest.

Equador, part 2 - Cotopaxi region

It's a little unsettling to realize that Cotopaxi is, in addition to being Equador's 2nd highest summit, an active stratovolcano. Eruptions over the years have hurled car-sized rocks over immense distances into nearby lava fields. Hikers ascend every day via the refuge which is situated at an altitude similar to the popular summit of Mount Kenya - 15,777 feet. Fueled by fresh air and tasty food from our hacienda, we hiked as far as the refuge for a cup of coca tea. Perhaps another time we'll return for a summit hike - an amazing 19,347 feet. During our few days in the area, we relaxed at the hacienda, rode beautiful horses through the national park, and went for moderate walks in the gently undulating landscape. And the stories are true - Brian was chased by a bull who didn't seem to approve of our choice of path through the countryside.

Equador, Part 1 - Quito & Mindo Cloud Forest

The convergence of colonial era architecture and modern skylines defines Quito. This vibrant and friendly city was our first stop on our Equador itinerary. The pictures below capture such contrasts as LeeAnne striding across the catwalk inside the roofline of the neo-Gothic (and newly constructed) Basílica del Voto Nacional and scrabbling across the rooftop of the historic Convento del San Francisco behind a nimble octogenarian.

Mindo Cloud Forest was an epic day trip led by our enthusiastic naturalist guide, David. The discovery of giant-leafed plants and the tiniest of creatures enhanced our appreciation for the beauty of this fragile ecosystem.
