The birds of our yard...

This past weekend, after watching the movie The Big Year, I was inspired to take photos of birds in our yard. I wasn't able to capture a few regulars but here are some beauties: hadada ibis, blue-cheeked cordon bleu (male and female), red-billed firefinch (male and female), variable sunbird, olive thrush, white-eyed slaty flycatcher (male and female) and our resident chicken, Mrs. Cluckers.

Relaxing at Lake Elementita...

We spent a very quiet week at home for the March break this year, but Brian and I managed to slip away for one night to the very posh new Serena lodge on Lake Elementita. It was luxury camping, to say the least. In fact, the words "camping" and "tent" can't really correspond to the experience at the lodge. It was lovely!

Action in the Rift Valley...

A few weeks ago our ISK Habitat for Humanity team traveled for the day to the Vumilia IDP camp in the Rift Valley. The team was a very hard-working one, and we managed to build two full foundations, which is exciting. At the Vumilia camp, there are only about 20 homes left to build; at some of the smaller IDP camps near Vumilia, hundreds of families are still living in makeshift tents (they've been living in these for almost four years now). A few weeks later, Brian and I visited Douglas and his family. Douglas has been busy establishing a sandal-making business and he is creating some beautiful designs. It was nice to visit with him and take home several pairs.
